Abstract This study aimed to develop a valid and reliable instrument, the Mental Images of Scientists Questionnaire ( MISQ ), use instrument examine Chinese students’ mental images scientists’ characters across school levels, regions, living settings, gender. The final version consisted four constructs: cognitive, affective, lifestyle, job characters. results showed that senior high students gave higher scores for cognitive character construct than junior elementary did. Students from eastern which have more highly developed economy, highest on affective constructs scientists. western less had relatively negative impression Students’ were positively correlated with their interests in pursuing scientific careers. Future research explore relationships between motivation pursue science-related careers or engage practices are recommended.
